Happy Friday! Today’s foodie feature is Jen from Tiny Urban Kitchen, one of my favorite Boston bloggers and one I had the great pleasure of meeting at the Stonyfield lunch. We share some of the same favorite restaurants in the Boston area (Craigie on Main and Mamma Maria), and I lived vicariously through her as she went on the Napa Valley adventure of a lifetime with Foodbuzz and S. Pellegrino. If you haven’t read her blog, I am certain you will want to by the end of this post. And if you haven’t been featured yet and would like to, let me know!

Kyaraben

Interview with Jen
I write the blog Tiny Urban Kitchen, which is so named because, like Meghan, I am also a city-girl and live in a tiny urban condo with a tiny urban kitchen in Cambridge, MA. I’ve been blogging on and off since 2007, but did not really get more serious about it until last summer when I renamed the blog “Tiny Urban Kitchen” and signed on with Foodbuzz. Throughout this past year, I have enjoyed blogging tremendously. I love meeting so many like-minded food lovers around the world, and it has provided me with many many amazing food opportunities as well.

What has surprised you most about food blogging?
I think everyone says the same thing, and I have to agree. The community is AWESOME. Most people start food blogging to share recipes with friends and family, or to keep a record of all the restaurants they’ve visited – at least that’s why I started my blog. You never really realize how food blogging can connect you to so many like-minded people around the world. I’ve had the great privilege to “meet” people from Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, and, of course, all over the US. Things like the Foodbuzz Festival are great ways to connect with other food lovers. I never would have thought that starting a food blog would open the door to so many other friendships, opportunities, and experiences.

_MG_3002-1
What has been the most amazing food opportunity that you’ve had as a result of food blogging?
No question it was my trip to the Napa Valley earlier this year to blog about the S. Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef Competition. Foodbuzz and S. Pellegrino had hosted a contest to send one person there.  The trip really opened my eyes to what the food industry is like. The food industry, especially the restaurant industry, is grueling, and it takes a ton of hard work and perseverance to make it. I was so privileged to be able to see this up close. It really gave me a new perspective and added respect for those who choose to follow this career path. Of course, Napa Valley is also beautiful, and I had a fabulous time there just checking out the vineyards and trying some amazing restaurants!

Kyaraben Party
Which posts did you have the most fun making?
That’s easy – it would have to be my first 24, 24, 24 post titled “Kyaraben on Steroids.” I spent the day making sushi and other foods in the shapes of my favorite Japanese anime characters. It was a ton of work and took all day, but to this day I still love looking at the pictures of the cute Hello KittyDomokuns, Totoros, and Keroppis that I made for this post.

I also love playing with my food and photographing them in different angles, and therefore some posts whose photography I really enjoyed creating are the ones about dragon fruit, meyer lemons, ratatouille, and fiddleheads.

What are you favorite restaurants in Boston?
My favorite neighborhood restaurant is definitely Garden at the Cellar. The truffle fries alone are the best I’ve ever had, and the rest of the menu is excellent and pricedvery veryreasonably. I hope it never moves away! Bergamot is also another excellent restaurant that just recently opened. For fancy dining, Craigie on Main, formerly Craigie Street Bistrot, is fantastic – some of the best food I’ve had in Boston. Bryan is also partial to O Ya, although I think I need to try it again before making my final conclusion (my first experience was disappointing).

Muqueca (Brazilian coastal food) is one of my favorite little ethnic family restaurants, while Mamma Maria or Prezza just might be my favorite North End restaurants (of course you can’t forget Mike’s Pastry!). Outside of the North End, we just love Basta Pasta, both the original Cambridge location and the new Quincy location.

As for Asian food, because I’m Taiwanese, that cuisine tends to be my favorite, which is why I love going to Taiwan CafeGourmet Dumpling House, and Shangri-La. I also love the hot pots at Little Q (more recently moved to Arlington). I think Fugakyu has one of the best sushi lunch specials around, and Cafe Sushi has one of the best Sunday evening sushi dinner specials.

Hi Rise Bakery is one of my favorite bakeries (love love love their vanilla loaf. My favorite ice cream is from Toscanini’s and my favorite pizza is from Emma’s. My favorite burgers are from Bartley’s, although Capital Grille and Smith & Wollensky are a close second.

What have been some of your favorite dining experience ever? In the world?
One of my all time favorite dining experiences in the world was at Kyubey in Tokyo. It’s this sushi place right down the street from Tsukiji Fish Market. We got the omakase and essentially had our personal sushi chef for most of the meal, creating interesting bites for us. As a seafood lover, my favorite restaurant in terms of food is probably Le Bernardin in New York City. One of my favorite dining experiences is probably at Daniel. The service, food, everything was so impeccable, it really made for an unforgettable experience. I also love dumplings, and therefore Din Tai fung in Taiwan is also one of my favorite dining places in the world.

Final Thoughts?
I love interacting with my readers through comments the blog. I like to think of the blog as a forum for communication about food. Although I offer lots of information on the blog, I have also learned a lot of things from my readers. The communication totally goes both ways, and I love it that way!

Thanks so much Meghan for a chance to be featured on your blog!

Random Friday Question: If you are a blogger, what has been your best blog-related experience? If you are a blog reader, what is the best thing that has come out of it?

P.S. If you are in San Francisco this weekend (lucky!), check out the SF Chefs 2010 event: http://www.sfchefsfoodwine.com/ It looks fabulous, and I wish I could go!

First things first, the Siggi’s winners are:

Raija, Jenna, and Magic of Spice

Congratulations! Please email me your contact info so I can get you some coupons for free Siggi’s yogurt. Yum.

I am sorry it took me so long to get around to pulling the winners of the giveaway. What a week! I am so happy that it is Friday. After a delicious but veerrrrrrrrry slow dinner at Bergamot last night, I knew that I could only take so much more this week. . .

Thankfully, I have a truly wonderful blogger for today’s Friday Foodie Feature, Jean from The Delightful Repast. I love her responses to the feature questions, and I am excited about her blog and look forward to seeing how it grows!

How long have you been blogging?
I should have started blogging long ago, but I resist technology. My friends think it’s a wonder I use a modern contraption like the gas stove! It wasn’t until February 15 that I started my blog.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?
As a freelance magazine writer, my articles must adhere to the magazines’ requirements. As a blogger, my posts can just flow out of whatever is on my mind at the time. A tightly focused magazine article may not have room for me to squeeze in anything about, say, the importance of eating seasonal, local, organic food that has been grown, harvested, produced and distributed in a socially, as well as environmentally, responsible way. Or about the importance of families sitting down to the dinner table together.

Least favorite?                                                                                     Narrowing down the possibilities is difficult. A lot of the things I make are outside the theme of my blog. The Delightful Repast’s subtitle is: A Tradition of Good Food ~ Comfort Food with Flair. So I try to stay with that theme. Another challenge is keeping it conversational. I tend to slip into the much more formal magazine-style of writing; it’s what I’m used to.

What has been your most fun blog post to write?
Well, I’ve really enjoyed the ones where I’ve talked about my grandmothers–one Southern, one English. My great grandmother even got a mention in my “Cream Gravy” post. But I must say I really had “fun” with two very early posts (before blogging had become work!). I recall having so much fun setting up the photos for these two. And with the “Enough Already with the Garlic!” I was smiling just thinking of the controversy it could stir up if enough people read it!

http://delightfulrepast.blogspot.com/2010/02/early-lesson-in-mise-en-place.html

http://delightfulrepast.blogspot.com/2010/02/enough-already-with-garlic.html

Where do you see your blog this time next year?
At that point, The Delightful Repast will be 16 months old. And it WILL be–I’m not going to drop out! I see my blog having thousands and thousands of regular readers by then (long before then, I hope!) and editors everywhere clamoring to have me write for them.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?
I wish I had started sooner, before there were a gazillion food blogs!

Remember, if you want to be a featured foodie, just email me at traveleatlove (@) gmail.com!

This weekend I have a blogger meetup, The ALLY Foundation Pink for a Change gala, and a day of REST.

It’s the weekend! I took a vacation day today to head to NJ to visit my family. It’s supposed to be a beautiful weekend, and I hope you are all gearing up for it! Next week is busy busy. I have a tweet up at the Melting Pot, dinner with some food and wine Twitter friends, a visit to a new cafe, and Taste of Cambridge, so I will enjoy some family time and rest this weekend!

Today’s foodie is a blogger who is new-ish to me, Brian from A Thought for Food. In the few weeks that I have been reading his blog, I have decided that he chose the perfect name for it. It is a beautiful site, and there is clearly a lot of thought put into it. He has some incredible food photos and recipes. My email correspondences with Brian have also really shown a lot of thought. When I needed a guest post because of a broken laptop :( he was the first to respond and ready to help. Overall, he is a great blogger, a super kind person, and someone I hope to meet at a Boston event soon! And I love the post he chose as his favorite so check it out!

A Thought for Food image

How long have you been blogging?
July will mark the first anniversary of A Thought For Food

What is your favorite thing about blogging?
I love that blogging has introduced me to foodies from around the world who share a common love for cooking.

Least favorite?
Planning what to blog about next.  I just have too many recipes I want to make and not enough time to make all of them.

What has been your most fun blog post to write?

http://www.athoughtforfood.net/2010/05/wedding-photographer-comes-for-dinner.html
A recent entry where my wedding photographer came over and took pictures of a dinner I made, which included a whole grilled haddock. It was a very collaborative experience.

Where do you see your blog this time next year?
It took the past year for me to really find my voice and I see that continuing to develop in the years to come. I also believe that the blog thrives off of other people’s connections to the stories and recipes I write about, so I hope that my readership continues to grow.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?
I think it’s a challenge for any amateur cook to find an outlet to express their love for food.  But what I’ve enjoyed so much about blogging is that it has allowed me to be creative in a way that few mediums can provide.

Want to be a featured foodie? Email me at traveleatlove (@) gmail.com. I am currently seeking foodies for the next 8 weeks or so!

ALSO since many of you are healthy living bloggers/readers, I wanted to share with you a bit of amazingness. George, who I met at Vino Voyage, is riding across the country to raise money for the Community Rowing adaptive program. You can check out his bio, route, and find more information on the cause here. http://thexcrideforcri.us/site/Welcome.html. And yes, that’s riding a BIKE across the country from Boston, MA to Portland, OR. You can follow him on Twitter, and I am sure he would appreciate the support!

Why does it always seem that short weeks feel REALLY long? I am happy to watch this past work week fade away and to tackle a fun weekend ahead. Other than a late Saturday brunch with friends and some volunteering at the MSPCA, my plans are few. How about you?

Last night, we finally received our beautiful new Vissani wine refrigerator. As part of stocking the fridge, I also decided to catalogue all of our wine. Something like oh, 80 bottles later, I was done. I am going to do a separate post on our home wine list and keeping your home sufficiently stocked this weekend, so stay tuned. It was actually a lot of fun and not as time consuming as I had imagined! It made me realize we have a lot of wine from California, New England, and Sicily but not from too many other places. Must expand wine horizons.

It has been awhile since I have done a Friday Foodie Feature due to some fun and bloggable Thursday night events (Vino Voyage, Boston Wine Exchange tasting, to name a few) and I am excited to bring back the feature with a blogger many of you love, Tina from Carrots ‘n’ Cake! Tina’s was the first blog I ever read and was one of the blogs that inspired me to start blogging. I have had the opportunity to hang out with her a few times, and she is just as fun and down to earth as she seems in her blog, the perfect balance of healthy and fit with fun.  She is always super busy and working hard, and I am happy she had the time to be featured here today!

How long have you been blogging?

Just about 2.5 years now. It’s crazy how time flies when you’re having fun!

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?

My favorite thing about blogging is the community. I have met so many
incredible people and learned so much from the blog world. My least
favorite thing about blogging is the mean/negative comments. (What’s
the point?)

What has been your most fun blog post to write?

The post announcing that I resigned from my full-time job at Harvard.
The photo still cracks me up!

http://carrotsncake.com/2009/10/i-resigned.html

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

Hopefully, it will be trucking along at the same pace!

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

I never planned for blogging to become such a big part of my life, but
I’ve enjoyed nearly every minute of the adventure!

If you haven’t been to Carrots ‘n’ Cake, you should definitely go on over for your fix of healthy, delicious meals, fun workouts, beer, wine, and other fun.

Don’t forget that I will announce the winner of my wine and cheese giveaway tomorrow!

First things first. Have you entered my Honest Tea giveaway? You can enter to win an entire case of a variety of Honest Tea flavors, so check it out!

It has been a good week for the bloggy with my first Foodgawker acceptance (followed by a dozen rejections!), my first Foodbuzz Top 9, and some fun giveaways in the works. I love a good blog week!

Otherwise, I have been dragging. I think it’s just the weather which is past due for some warmth and sunshine. It is promised to be in the 70’s for the weekend, and I can not wait, not to mention that I have 2 great wine events and a possible food event coming up this week. TGIF!

Today’s foodie feature, Erin from Travel Eat Repeat is a girl after my own heart. She has an awesome travel and living abroad background and shares my goal of eating her way around the world and telling everyone about it! Erin’s blog is so much fun, and it is really just a breath of fresh air to read. I love checking it out every day, and I can’t wait to see what adventures she finds stateside!

Whitehaven Beach, Australia

How long have you been blogging?

I’ve been blogging since October 2007, when I started my blog (then called Postcards From the World) to keep in touch with friends and family back home while studying abroad in London. It wasn’t something I started doing regularly until I moved to South Korea in September 2008. Suddenly, blogging was a fantastic way to record my day-to-day life in Seoul and share that experience with others, too.

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?

I love meeting new people–both in person and on-line–and realizing how many shared interests we have. Blogging has also introduced me to new recipes, cool products and created a fantastic Internet network of liked-minded people. There’s nothing I don’t like about blogging, except maybe those days when absolutely nothing has happened and I feel like there’s nothing to say or blog about. Luckily those days are pretty rare. ;)

What has been your most fun blog post to write?

People really seemed to like the posts I wrote about traveling through Australia and New Zealand but my personal favorite was called “How to travel around the world without being rich.” By far the thing I get the most emails and comments about is “how do you travel so much?” so I was able to talk about my experience teaching in Korea and being budget-conscious.

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

My life is changing so much right now–settling down from traveling, searching for an apartment, interviewing for full-time jobs. I want my blog to reflect that and show what it’s like to be a single girl living in the city and exploring everything there is to do here.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

I don’t keep a “traditional” food blog but that’s definitely the type of blog I read the most. It’s fun to do my own thing and I really encourage more people to start blogging, no matter what subject they want to write about. Thanks so much for this opportunity, Meghan!

Thank you, Erin, for sharing some of your adventures with us and especially for sharing this photo, which is no doubt the best photo to ever be posted on Travel Eat Love!

Chiang Mai, Thailand

If you would like to be featured as a Friday Foodie in the future, please email me: traveleatlove at gmail.com.

See you all again very soon ;)

I won’t lie, I am tired. I read so many fitness and healthy living blogs, and it seems like everyone recovers from endurance events super fast. Not me. My legs feel fine, and I am not in horrible shape, but I feel a little more tired than normal for sure, and I am looking forward to the weekend. Tonight I am attending Healthworks post marathon celebration, and for the rest of the weekend, who knows? Sleeping and eating are definitely part of the plan. I started laying out my May calendar last night, and there are so many fun events coming up! Wine tastings, wine dinners, oyster festivals, weekend trips and lots more to come!  This may be one of the last kind of quiet weekends for  awhile, so I am going to relish it. What are you doing this weekend?

Today I am pleased to feature the lovely Kate from the blog WhatKateAte. I have just recently started reading Kate’s blog; like so many other great things I found it via Twitter. She has some great recipes and tasty looking photos, not to mention an incredible, inspiring healthy weight loss story. She’s a great writer, and I am very excited that she responded to my tweet seeking foodies to feature.

Enjoy today’s Friday Foodie Feature, and be sure to check out Kate’s blog if you haven’t already!

What Kate Ate

How long have you been blogging?
I started WhatKateAte the day after I returned home from spending a month in Greece (January 18th). I had toyed with the idea of starting a blog for some time, but I wanted to make sure that I could dedicate as much time and energy as I wanted into the project before I committed. Sure enough, I took the leap and slowly I have been finding what works for me and I haven’t looked back!

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?
Part of the reason why I have found success in the realm of healthy living is due to the inspiration and information I found on food blogs – now I’m part of that community. It’s wonderful to be able to share my story with so many people who can relate and also to extend my experience to those who are in the process of making healthy changes in their lifestyle.  I also really enjoy being able to write about topics that I’m passionate about: food, the environment, swimming, and yoga.

My biggest challenge of being a blogger is that I sometimes find myself unnecessarily comparing myself to other bloggers.  After discovering this in myself, it made me realize that part of my healthy living journey is learning to compare my current self with my old self, since that is really the measurement that matters.

What has been your most fun blog post to write?
I really enjoyed the recent post that I did where I shared some photos of my trip to Greece.  One of the fabulous things about blogging is that you can look back at any day and have an instant flashback through photos and dialogue, and I really love that experience.

Where do you see your blog this time next year?
This time next year will be a huge time of transition for me in my life and I hope to have the privilege of being able to blog through the changes on

Wine Riot made me feel old in a good way, i.e. realizing I prefer wine tastings with polite people where the mission isn’t to pound as much wine as possible in the allotted amount of time. The environment felt a little frantic, and there were lots of elbows thrown and feet stepped on as the attendees tried to shove their way to camp out at the tables so not to miss a single drop.

I normally try to avoid being overly critical of things on my blog and try to focus on the positive. In fact, just the other day someone commented on my ability to write about things that I don’t care for kindly. But I also feel the need to be honest, if only for the sake of my own credibility. The concept behind Wine Riot is pretty neat, a less formal, more fun and not stuffy wine tasting that attracts a lot of young people. But how young? This might be my curmudgeonly 30 year old self speaking, but I felt like half of the people at the event were not even legal.  It kind of felt like a frat party with wine instead of Natty Ice, and I am pretty sure that most of the boys were named Chad and were wearing pink sweaters and/or backwards baseball hats.

We only stayed at the Wine Riot for about 30 minutes. In that time I tasted maybe 5 wines because it was almost impossible to get a pour. The rep from Hess stared at us for about 10 minutes, and it was like we were invisible as he poured repeat pours for the other 4 people at the table. Really?

Anywho, there were a few highlights of the event worth mentioning.

1) The Travessia table -The husband and I have been big fans of Travessia wines and their winemaker, Marco Montez, since  last summer , and we were happy to see him and to taste the 2008 Unoaked Chardonnay, Bastard Rosé, and Vidal Blanc at the Wine Riot. As always, I loved the Rosé and Vidal Blanc the best. The Rosé is a blend of 3 different wines, whites and reds, and in my opinion it is still one of the best Rosé wines I have ever had. I have said it before, but if you are in the MA or RI areas, do check out this cool little winery in New Bedford or look for them at upcoming wine events in the area. Totally and completely worth your time.

2) The Mionetto table- Tasting Mionetto Prosecco brought back fond memories of the Newport Wine & Food Festival from last fall, sitting on the expansive lawn, overlooking the blue ocean, and drinking prosecco with friends. Mionetto makes great, very food friendly bubbly at great values and are always worth a try.

Mionetto Prosecco

3) Cabot Cheese- Cabot makes the best cheese, and I always seem to find their table at every food and wine event I attend. I might just be doing a Cabot giveaway next week. . . check back to find out for sure ;)

I didn’t encounter much beside those 3. One of the reps from 90+ Cellars sort of laughed at me for “taking photos for posterity” which would have been fine if their wine didn’t remind me of nail polish remover. Oh and I tasted possibly the worst wine I have ever had a German bubbly with bits of gold in it. I guess the gimmicky gold should have given me a clue. . . but I literally spit it back into my wine glass it was so awful, like a sharp, bubbly vinegar.

After our short stint at the Wine Riot, the husband indulged my race weekend excitement by driving me through the finish line of a lifetime.

Boston Marathon finish

Exciting. My left knee really hurts, and I am hoping that it will allow me to finish. . .

My Saturday night carbo loading took place at Prezza in Boston’s North End which was full of fellow marathoners eating pasta to gear up for the big race. The Prezza menu was full of dishes that we wanted to try.

Prezza menu

And they had a great by the glass wine list. I was excited to see Gloria Ferrer Va de vi on the list. You can read about our Gloria Ferrer winery visits here, here, and here. Love it.

Gloria Ferrer Va de vi

We started with the Crispy Shrimp with Italian Slaw and Cherry Pepper Aioli, a delicious dish with sweet jumbo shrimp and a crispy phyllo nest topped with a zesty, creamy sauce.

Crispy Shrimp with Italian Slaw and Cherry Pepper Aioli

We also had one of my favorite Italian dishes, Zucchini Flowers with Creamy Polenta, Pancetta, and Tomatoes. The polenta was probably my favorite part of the entire meal! It was so creamy and buttery.

Zucchini Flowers with Creamy Polenta, Pancetta, and Tomatoes

The hubs ordered the Paella which was full of clams, lobster, mussels, chicken, and chorizo.

Paella

And I had a half order of Gnocchi a la Bolognese which came in an incredibly rich sauce. It was delicious and very filling. Along with some bread and olives in olive oil, I think the gnocchi gave me my carbohydrate fill for the night.

Gnocchi Bolognese

The dessert menu was incredible though, and even though I wanted 4 different things, we decided on the flourless chocolate cake which was hot, molten perfection, topped with vanilla bean ice cream.

Flourless Chocolate Cake

Prezza provided the PERFECT meal for a very chilly, gray April evening. Like many North End restaurants, it does not look like much from the outside, but the elegant dining room and bar stretch far back, creating a comfortable and special environment for a fine dining experience.

One more day to the Boston Marathon, and there is still time to support Team ALLY! http://firstgiving.com/meghanmalloyteamally AND to enter my Equal Exchange giveaway which ends on Tuesday!

Now to the Friday Foodie Feature! Today we have Nicole from the wonderful Cooking with Coley. Nicole’s blog makes you feel like you are a guest in her kitchen, and it features lots of delicious recipes and really great photos. We share a love of Google Analytics :) as I too am a little obsessed with my (meager!) traffic. I am really looking forward to following what Nicole cooks next!

Cooking with Coley

How long have you been blogging?
I’m still a newbie to the blogging thing, but I’m no newbie to the blogosphere.  With a PR background, I spend quite a bit of time exploring the Web and even pitching bloggers, so it’s been really exciting for me to be on the other side. www.cookingwithcoley.com was just launched in January 2010.

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?
There are so many things I love about blogging – the excitement of capturing a new dish on camera, the anticipation of what responses and comments I’ll receive from my readers and friends and the sheer pleasure it brings me as I multitask on my couch while watching TV.
I should also mention that I love Google Analytics. Seriously.  Although it might sound weird, every day the first thing I do when I log onto my computer is check my analytics (go ahead, you can laugh at me).  While the results are usually nothing to boast about, I get excited to see the traffic numbers.  Yes, I’m that lame.
Least ?
Right now there’s nothing that comes to mind!

What has been your most fun blog post to write?
There’s no question about this one – it was my first recipe post ever on my signature dish – Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps.  Friends and family had so often asked me to give them recipes (especially this one), so for months and months I kept saying I was going to create a recipe blog for them pull my recipes from.  The day I finally wrote and posted my first recipe gave me such a rush – it was a combination of exhilaration and fulfillment.  I had rediscovered my love for writing and brought my passion for cooking to life.
http://cookingwithcoley.com/asian-chicken-lettuce-wraps-–-my-signature-dish/

Where do you see your blog this time next year?
Probably with 10,000 unique monthly visitors, a dozen major advertisers and exploding with content.  OK, I am being facetious.  If I have 1000 monthly visitors, I think I’ll be ecstatic!  I honestly don’t know where this is going, but I’m enjoying every bit of it along the way and am excited to see where this journey takes me.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?
It’s more of a fun fact… www.cookingwithcoley.com was originally launched as NicForMasterChef.com.  Sounds like a weird name, right?  Well, it’s sort of a fun story.  On Sunday, January 10, 2010, I tried out at a Master Chef casting audition in Newton along with 200 other Bostonians (Master Chef is a new show coming to Fox about amateur chefs). I had to plate my signature dish (lettuce wraps) and serve it to the judges. From there I was asked back with about 20 other people to round two where I did an on-camera interview for nearly 30 minutes, where I then qualified for round three – part of the top 10 in Boston!

As part of the third round, I had a few days to pull together raw footage that captured me and my life – friends, family, my kitchen and of course me cooking!  To supplement my footage, and help me stand out, I created the blog NicForMasterChef in hopes it would show the judges and producers that I should be on the show and have what it takes.

Unfortunately, I never ended up making it on the show (I guess reality TV wasn’t my calling!), but I am so appreciative and thankful for what I took away from the experience.  By creating the blog, I rediscovered my interest in writing and found a new outlet to pursue that passion.  At the same time, I was able to couple it with my growing fondness of food and cooking… and from there Cooking with Coley was born.

Thanks so much, Nicole!

The weekend is here! Well almost. . . only a few hours until we wrap up another work week. What are you doing this weekend? Tonight I am heading to a wine tasting at Morton’s which I am very excited about. Tomorrow I am going to Down 2 Earth, Boston’s Sustainable Living Expo, and Sunday I will reunite with my puppy dog friends at the MSPCA. Due to training and travel, I haven’t been to the MSPCA to volunteer in a few weeks, and I totally miss dog walking!

Today’s Friday Foodie Feature is no stranger to Travel Eat Love readers. Kelly from She Wears a Red Sox Cap has guest posted about her New Zealand adventures (here & here) and shares my love of food, fitness, wine, travel, and New England. I read her blog every single day, and I have had fun following her wedding planning. Probably more fun than she has haha :)

Take it away Kelly!

How long have you been blogging?
My one year blog anniversary will be April 22nd, so almost a year. I also had a really ridiculous blog back in college that was basically a dialog between me and some of my friends.

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least Favorite?
I think my #1 favorite thing about blogging is how much it has expanded my horizons. I have tried so many different foods, recipes, restaurants, exercises, etc because I knew it would make “good blogging material,” but really it just makes really good experiences that I am so happy to have had. I’m a bit of a “play it safe” person, so it’s nice to have that extra push to try new things and always challenge myself. It has also expanded my horizons about people. I have made so many great blogging friends and it’s so fun and interesting having friends from all over the world. For a whole list of things I love about blogging, check here:

My least favorite thing about it is when I’m a restaurant and someone wants to know (usually friends of friends or something) why I am taking pictures of my food and why I blog etc. I know I should just answer the questions up front, but I always get a little embarrassed about it. It always seems to make more sense to people once they read my blog, but when they haven’t yet I always get that “why would you EVER do that” vibe from them.

What has been your most fun blog post to write?
All of my posts have been fun to write, but probably my favorite was from my recap of my spring triathlon last summer. The triathlon is sort of why I started the blog in the first place and I had talked a lot about training, and a knee injury I suffered (and still suffer, boo) as a result of training, so it was nice to show the hard work had paid off.

Another fun post I did with Eric on cheating in relationships. Glamour Magazine did an article on what they think is cheating, vs. what is not cheating. Eric and I discussed each one and I posted about our opinions. Eric’s responses just made me laugh, so I laughed the whole time I wrote the post :)

Where do you see your blog this time next year?
Truthfully, I’m not sure. Most obviously, I’d love for my blog to be better, and to have a lot more readers. But I haven’t 100 percent worked out exactly how I am going to accomplish that and what changes it will mean for my blog. I think that is okay though. If you had asked me where my blog would be today one year ago, I would’ve had no clue either- and I’m so happy with how far it has come.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?
I am so happy that I ventured into the blog world about a year ago. Most days I look forward to coming home from work so I can write my blog post (and eat my ice cream in front of the tv haha). I think the number 1 way that I keep blogging so positive for me is to not take myself too seriously. I know that if I don’t post one day, my readers will survive :) This attitude has helped keep blogging fun and not make it seem like another item on my already too long to-do list.

It’s the weekend! And a long (for me) holiday weekend with my family at that! The weather has turned for the better, I have a few days off, its been a week of fabulous eats. What could be better? Today’s Friday Foodie Feature is Seth from MysteryMeet.org, Boston Foodies Discovering New Restaurants. I am excited to feature a site that is not a food blog both to mix things up a little bit and also because I am very interested in the concept of MysteryMeet.org.

What is MysteryMeet.org?
It’s a site for Boston foodies that want to discover new restaurants.  On the second Tuesday of every month, we get together at a new dining establishment, where we’ve arranged an exclusive pre-fixe menu.  We invite you to the Mystery Meets however you want – by email, text message, Facebook or Twitter – but there’s a catch: we only give you 24 hours advance notice!  So if you’re not in the know, you miss out!  It’s a great way for foodies to discover new restaurants, and for new restaurants to get the word out.

Is MysteryMeet.org a food blog?
It’s not.  There are so many great food blogs out there – from Boston Restaurant Talk to Grub Street to the Boston Foodie – that I decided I’d rather share what they do than try to reproduce it.  So I have a list of great Boston food blogs on MysteryMeet and I’m constantly passing along their posts thru Twitter and on our Facebook Page  .  But we’re not a blog; we’re not a dating site; we’re not a networking site.  We’re really just about getting together to try new restaurants.

When will you host your first Mystery Meet?
We’re aiming to host our first Mystery Meet in May.  We’re always looking for new restaurants at which host them, so feel free to send us suggestions!

How did you get involved in restaurant events?
I was producing a lot of hospitality events in Providence, including bartending competitions and the New England Nightlcub and Bar Expo    at the Twin River Casino.  Last summer, my girlfriend and I produced the Rhode Island World of Flavors  , with almost 30 restaurants competing for a $15,000 prize package.  She now works in admissions at Le Cordon Bleu in Kendall Square, and I do social media in Burlington for a living.  When we moved up here, I wanted to continue working with restaurants, so I launched MysteryMeet.org as a side project.

Where do you see MysteryMeet.org in a year?
Hopefully, we’ll have a solid foodie following that will be joining us once a month.  We are also looking for ways to tie a charity in to what we do, so I hope we find a way to eat for a good cause.

Thank you, Seth, for helping all of us, including me, understand the concept behind MysteryMeet.org. I can not wait to hear about and hopefully attend the first event, and I would definitely like to write a follow up post sometime after the first Mystery Meet.

This post serves as a great reminder that you don’t have to be a blogger to be a featured foodie! Have an idea or foodie life you want to share? Let me know at traveleatlove@gmail.com
