Boston’s first Food Truck Festival was certainly a meaty affair! The South End Open Markets made room for a caravan of food trucks serving, for the most part,  a meat-lover’s dream.  There were many vendors including Speed’s Hot Dogs, M & M Ribs, the Sausage Guy, and another hot dog truck. The lines for all of these were enormously long. Luckily, the line at Grillo’s Pickles was short, short enough for me to return twice for their spicy, crispy pickles.

These pickles are pretty amazing, though I would love it if they served whole pickles, deli-style.

The line was also short at another favorite of mine, Equal Exchange Cafe. Their nutty, buttery roast is always delicious and always doing good. So my day started off with pickles and coffee, the breakfast of champions!

The Food Truck festival was a great idea in theory, it is an event that might have been better saved for cooler weather and laid out a little better so to avoid maddening, crisscrossing lines. More veggie options would have been nice too. I think I went into the event expecting it to be like the                 FoodBuzz Festival street food event, which was a little off. At any rate, I was hungry, so we headed over to the market part of the open markets.

I admired some of the jewelry and other wares for sale, including these dog bowls made out of old wine boxes. You know that I will have one of these for my someday dog.

I spent some time drooling over Marie Galvin’s stunning hats and fascinators wishing I had an occasion to wear one to.

And then we got down to food business. You can always count on The Herb Lyceum at Gilson’s to have fresh, amazing food. We shared the Herbal Spring Roll, a crunchy fresh roll that feature’s Gilson’s fresh herbs and comes with a flavorful peanutty sauce.

We also shared their BLT which paired salty bacon with chewy focaccia, perfect summer tomatoes, lettuce, and a bit of mayo.

The South End Open Markets always start the day off right. After, we did some Trader Joe’s shopping for the week, especially to get the hubby well stocked since I am going to be working from my mom’s in NJ later in the week while she recovers from surgery. Prior to that I have a Healthworks blogger event, a lunch at Sibling Rivalry, and lots of work to do. . . it’s going to be a busy one!

Happy Friday! I couldn’t find a foodie to feature in time for my Friday post, so I bring you a restaurant review instead. My hubby is working, so I am hoping to get some good workouts in, along with some cleaning, volunteering, and finally the first Boston Food Truck Festival at the SOWA markets. I often walk through Boston’s South End on my way home from work, and along the way I pass tons of great restaurants and shops. I have eaten at many of them multiple times, Coppa, Toro, Petit Robert Bistro, The Beehive, Pops, Stephi’s, B & G Oyster, Anchovies, the list goes on and on. And then there are those restaurants that I pass by, wonder about, but never actually get to.

Last night I was feeling like I hadn’t a drop of energy left. I have been putting a lot into work, blogging, writing for other websites, and felt a little bummed that I am missing BlogHer and all of the opportunities that come with it. We decided we needed to go out to dinner, and we adventurously tried           Seiyo Sushi and Wine, a restaurant that, though beautiful, never seems as full as many of the other South End spots.

To that I say, more room for us!

Seiyo has a gorgeous interior, but we decided to take advantage of the thunderstorm-cooled summer evening to sit on the patio.

Seiyo, being a sushi and wine bar, has a great wine list and a completely off the hook beer menu.

We decided to share the Biera Corsa ‘Pietra’ Chestnut Amber Ale from Corsica. It was beautifully nutty, toasty, and delicious.

We ordered the shrimp shumai, avocado salad, Seiyo California roll, and a spicy tuna roll.

Everything was perfect. The California roll was made with chunks of real Jonah crab meat, and the spicy tuna was some of the freshest I have ever eaten. The shumai were pillowy little bites of shrimp and dough, blissfully dipped into a slightly salty sauce. The avocado salad was the most heavenly, though. It had a creamy dressing, and I am sure it was full of fat, but it was so yummy. Crunchy strips of seaweed, soft avocado, and crisp cucumbers, all mixed together, an exciting mix of textures and flavors.

The service at Seiyo was extremely friendly. We felt so welcome, and every need was anticipated. I haven’t been to a sushi restaurant with such a developed beer and wine list and unique dishes in awhile, and Seiyo was exciting and refreshing. I can’t believe we haven’t gone sooner!

I had my nose and belly button pierced but I took them out when I graduated college to look more employable ;)

Last night I had the very fun opportunity to volunteer at the Taste of the South End, an annual event that brings restaurants, bakeries, and wineries together with foodies for a great cause, the AIDS Action Committee.

The Taste of the South End is Boston’s premier food & wine event in our neighborhood and it brings together all of the South End chefs for the AIDS Action Committee. It is a fine way to both raise money for a wonderful organization that does vital work in our community and also have fun saying hello to friends, neighbors and colleagues. I would not miss this event for the world,” said participating chef Gordon Hamersley

I arrived at around 4:45 and got to take a quick walk around to see the hustle and bustle of the setup. After a brief volunteer orientation, we got to work. I was in charge of assisting Masa, Avila, and Flash’s. It was an easy volunteer gig; all I had to do was make sure they had enough ice, napkins, utensils, plates etc. We were also to watch out for spills and to bus tables to make sure there weren’t dirty dishes laying around.

I stopped by and visited the table from Rodney Strong, a winery I will be visiting in California wine country in just a week and a half! I also tried to chat to reps from another winery I planned on visiting. . . and they were quite unfriendly! Reconsidering that visit. . .

And my favorite brunch spot, Masa, was serving up their habanero watermelon margaritas.

Volunteering was a lot of fun and very easy. I got to chat with a few of the other volunteers, and the best part of course was that we got to take breaks to sample the delicious food on display. The only downside was that we could not taste the wine, and there were a few great wineries there. Next year, I would definitely consider buying tickets to attend the event. With the money going to a great cause and the sheer number of quality South End establishments cooking up a storm, its really a great deal for an evening out.

The planning team and everyone involved deserves a real round of applause. They did a great job, and from what I could see, everything went very smoothly.

Good rainy morning! It is a super dark, rainy, chilly Saturday here in Boston, and other than a few hours of working on a few marketing pieces for work and walking doggies, I have no plans!! Wheeeeee! Having an open day makes me happier than anything.

We really kicked the weekend off right last night with a night of completely unplanned fun. I had a really frustrating day, the reason I am working again today, but all of that was erased when my husband came to meet me at Mistral near my office in Boston’s Back Bay. We each ordered a cocktail off of Mistral’s very tempting menu. I had the Harvest Martini, perfect for the cool and cloudy evening it had become. The martini consisted of Grey Goose vodka, apple schnapps, reduced local cider, and cranberry juice. It had a pretty apple chip floating in it.

This cocktail was the perfect blend of sweet from the apple cider and tart from the cranberry juice. New England in a glass! We enjoyed sitting at Mistral’s bar sipping our drinks for quite awhile. Mistral is very swanky and beautifully decorated, great for a very special evening out but still comfortable enough to go to for drinks after work.

For dinner we decided to wander around the South End a bit and ended up once again at The Beehive on Tremont Street. Last year I had a few not-so-great Beehive experiences, but the last two or three have been fantastic. The beehive is an underground bistro richly decorated with a bohemian vibe, nightly live jazz, and great food. It gets very crowded, but we were lucky to get two seats at the end of the bar. For some reason we love to eat at the bar on a Friday night. There’s something a little more cozy about it than a table, especially if you get the two corner seats.

For our meals we decided on the raw bar platter for two, which is a beautiful combination of oysters, lobster, tuna tartare, shrimp ceviche, and shrimp cocktail with a variety of sauces including mignonette, cocktail sauce, and garlic aioli. We also ordered the local fried clams and a Greek style wedge salad with yogurt dressing. The rest of my Friday meals consisted of yogurt, apples, and a  spinach and chickpea salad with almonds, so I was pretty hungry by the time the food arrived! Luckily, it was delicious.

With my meal I also had a glass of Mumm Napa Prestige. It brought back great memories of sitting on the oak terrace at Mumm a few weeks ago, and made me SO excited to be back in Napa next month and to meet some of you in San Francisco!!! While we ate, The Beehive really filled up. The music was GREAT. If you are ever in Boston I would recommend stopping by even just for a drink or coffee and to hear the live music. The Beehive is one of those places great for people “my age”. In a town FULL of college students, it is often hard to find live music in a location where you won’t get jostled, spilled on, or worse, but The Beehive offers a nice, sophisticated environment with music, and you can still hear your dining companion.

Fall favorite – pots of mums everywhere!

After The Beehive the plan was to go home. As we were walking back to the car, we saw that Brix Wine Shop was full of people, so we decided to see what the commotion was. They were having a “Battle of the Cabernets” tasting. Never shy to taste wine, I joined in :) We tasted four cabernets, my favorites being from Red Lion and Montes. We bought a bottle of each. The most fun part was speaking with the rep from Classic Wine Imports who gave us some great hints for our next visit to wine country. We also got chatting to a bunch of other attendees. I love meeting strangers!

Now we REALLY planned on going home, but we saw that, like every first Friday of the month, it was open artists studios in the SOWA buildings in the South End. Completely free, unless you buy art of course, this event is awesome. All of the local artists have their studios open, usually with wine and cheese and other goodies, so that you can browse the art, mingle with other Bostonians, and have a really good time. I loved wandering through the halls of this crazy old building which I think was once a mill. I met a couple of Chinese cresteds named Brandy and Slippers and to
ok in lots of gorgeous paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and even hats.

Though I loved seeing all of the art and am interested in starting to buy from local artists, I loved the hats the most. They were in the studio of Milliner Marie Galvin, and they were stunning. If you have been to a wedding in Ireland, you will see that most women wear creations like Ms. Galvin’s, and I just love it. I am now waiting for our next Irish wedding so I can buy one!!

All in all we really had a fabulous night, none of which was planned. I am glad that I somehow found the energy to keep going because we stumbled across so much of what makes Boston great. I will be back later with the winners of the giveaway, and I promise I have some un-Boston posts planned for the next few days, hopefully an autumn road trip tomorrow if the weather cooperates! For this morning I have my Lyons tea and the windows open enjoying the Irish weather morning. Hope that you are all having a great Saturday so far!

TGIF!  Seriously, the weekend could not have come fast enough! I had a pretty rotten day- some work stress, got soaked on my way in this morning, and my poor mom was diagnosed with Lyme disease. She is going to be ok but is on some heavy medicine and in a lot of pain. Good thing I was planning on visiting this weekend.

The highlight of the day was the arrival of my Amazing Grass samples! I am planning a review later this weekend, but let me tell you that I have already had the chocolate Amazing Meal, and it was DELICIOUS. I will be going online later this evening to buy a tub! Thank you to Teri from Amazing Grass. I am really looking forward to trying more of their products.

I will be off to NJ for the weekend and not posting tomorrow, but I hope you all have a fab weekend. Below is a review of a great new Boston restaurant. Enjoy! :)

 

After my lovely weekend on the Cape, the hub and I decided to catch up over dinner, and for some time now I had been wanting to try Stephi’s on Tremont, the sister restaurant to the famous Stephanie’s on Newbury, a fabulous place for food and cocktails. Stephi’s is closer to our home, in Boston’s South End, a neighborhood that I LOVE and luckily get to walk through every morning on my way to work.

I have mentioned in the past that the South End is a foodie paradise. I certainly have my favorites – (Petit Robert anyone?)but I also want to try a million other places in the area. I chose Stephi’s for this sunny Sunday night because 1) from walking by, I could tell I would love the interior 2) the menu looked lovely and comforting but also offers a bunch of entrée size salads. After a weekend of indulgence with the girls, I wanted something tasty but healthy too.

We made a last minute reservation on Open Table and arrived at Stephi’s right on time. The hostess knew who we were right away- neat. We were taken to a cozy corner booth and met our server for the evening. I can’t remember his name, but he was fantastic. So attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. He kept an eye on us from afar but didn’t intrude at all.

There were several menu items that I wanted to try. I started with a glass of  cava and the hub got a Pinot Noir from MacMurray Ranch in Sonoma County. I loved my cava, but being that it was a chilly night, I had a sip of the Pinot and it was amazing. I hope that we get to visit MacMurray Ranch when we can finally book a trip to CA! It was so earthy with some very nice dark red fruit undertones. After a trip to Portland, OR last summer, I am loving West Coast Pinot Noirs and look forward to trying more.

Our server brought us a delish little loaf of bread that was wrapped in wax paper. We wondered where the butter or oil was, and it turned out to sort of be ON the loaf. The bread was hot and the crust was almost croissant-like. Needless to say, we finished it off. It was the perfect portion to eat while we waited for our meal.

For my entrée I decided on a salad, the Asian Yellow Fin Tuna Salad:
seared sashimi grade tuna with chilled udon noodles,
charred hot cherry peppers, shredded carrots, cabbage
and cucumbers, bean sprouts, spicy peanuts,
toasted coconut and sweet chili dressing

It was perfectly fresh, crisp and flavorful. The coconut and chopped peanuts were a perfect accent to the veggies and the seared tuna. I love some noodles in a salad; they add such a satisfying element. I was completely full after eating about half. The rest was a lovely lunch on Monday!

Can we say delicious New England comfort? Normally this would not likely be a meal we would order in June, but if you live in the Northeast you probably know that its been gray, rainy and chilly for over a week. The night was cool, and this dish was decadent.

We ended up too full for dessert and took a walk to the dog park nearby to get some activity in. We may have picked up a red velvet cupcake from the South End Buttery on the way home, but I will post about that on another day . . .

Sometimes its just the kind of day that is required to end in drinks and appetizers on a lovely outdoor patio. Today was definitely that kind of day, and I was thrilled when Eric suggested meeting me in Boston’s South End for a couple of snacks. Rocca is about a 15 minute walk from my office, and it was very nice to be out in the fresh air, stretch my legs,and ogle at the eating paradise that is the South End.

We chose Rocca because of its proximity to our home and the ample parking in addition to the fact that every time we have eaten there, it has been delish. We arrived and asked about sitting on the patio. Turns out they have seating for people having cocktails and a larger outdoor area for dinner.

We just wanted appetizers and drinks so we sat off to the side. What a gorgeous evening it was! For my drink I decided on a glass of Mionetto prosecco, a light, bubbly, and refreshing choice. It was just what I wanted and fit the weather perfectly. I love bubbly, it makes everything feel like a celebration!

For food we decided on the fried cauliflower with a side of garlic mayo and the antipasti.

The fried cauliflower was divine, lightly battered and crispy. Plus its a vegetable right? :)

The antipasti had a huge serving of pickled carrots, cauliflower, and zucchini, along with prosciutto, salami, pecorino cheese, and an eggplant tapenade, topped with grilled bread. These two appetizers were the perfect portions to fill us up without being too full. The service was friendly, the atmosphere very relaxing, and we will definitely go back. One thing of note is that Rocca does a Sunday supper – 2 courses and a sweet for $22! They also were giving away FREE iced coffee last Sunday during the South End Open Markets. That was actually what gave us the idea to go this week. Who doesn’t appreciate a free iced coffee on a hot day??

As I posted yesterday, I can not wait for our weekend plans. Lots of work to do before then. . . off to finish up for the night and hopefully get some sleep. Buenas noches :)
