Tis the season for dining out in the North End! I love this neighborhood year-round, but when summer comes, the windows of the restaurants open on to the streets, there are bustling crowds, and of course the weather is warm enough for gelato!

The North End offers so many different Italian eateries, making it difficult to choose, but when a bunch of us got together for dinner last week I knew I wanted to try Ristorante Damiano. You see, Executive Chef Damien DiPaola is a fellow UMASS alum and owned the Amherst-area restaurant, Carmelina’s, a place I never got to in college. Since I missed Carmelina’s I knew I had to get to Damiano, and we had the perfect night for it.

The interior of Ristorante Damiano features lovely exposed brick, the walls decorated with old North End photos.

Once we got settled at our table, we ordered a bottle of wine, Planeta Segreta Bianco, a blend of Grecanico, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Fiano. Then we started in on the extensive menu.

Damiano features piattini , small plates, and we ordered several to share.

Roasted Beet Salad – Arugula, goat cheese, toasted pignoli, blood orange vinaigrette

This light, refreshing dish offered a peppery bite from the arugula and was a nice, summery way to start the meal.

Lamb Lollipop – Dipped in pistachio crust, mint pesto, rubio glaze, fruit Macedonia.

I didn’t try these, but I loved the presentation!

Garlic Shrimp Sautéed Ebi Shrimp, garlic, thyme, lemon, over spinach

Shrimp and garlicky greens should be on my table every night. I loved the simple. flavorful ingredients

Braised Wild Mushrooms – Garlic, sage, trace of tomato, truffle oil, Parmigiano polenta

The deep earthy flavors of both the mushrooms and the sage went nicely with the pop of juicy tomatoes.

Carbonara – Pancetta, egg, parmigiano, cracked pepper, spaghetti

Mmm creamy, pepper, rich, and delicious. The spaghetti was nice and thick, perfectly coated with sauce

We also had fried baby eggplant in tomato sauce and a steaming bowl of mussels with a side of fresh rolls. I loved every bite of dinner and found the small plates eating style to be fun, especially with friends who are up for trying all sorts of different things.

We followed up dinner with cocktails at nearby Bacco at a table next to an open window, rounding out a perfect North End evening.

Do you have a favorite neighborhood to visit in your city? Is there a restaurant you are more likely to visit with a big group?

A couple of weeks ago, I was contacted by a representative from Lucini Italia products asking if I wanted to try their Tuscan Chickpea Frittata mix. I love trying new products, so I of course said yes. Imagine my surprise when I came home from the Healthworks picnic last Tuesday and found a HUGE box full of items from Lucini. I kept digging through the packing materials and finding more and more, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, soups, sauces, salad dressing, and of course the chickpea frittata.

I couldn’t wait to get back to NJ and into my kitchen to get started with the delicious-looking gifts I received. Last night was our first night home in ages, so I made a quick and tasty dinner featuring Lucini products.

For the salad portion of dinner, I made one of my favorite simple combinations, romaine, red onion, and local heirloom tomato topped with Lucini’s Fig & Walnut Savory Balsamic.

I love that I found local heirloom tomatoes at Trader Joe’s as I missed the farmers’ market on Friday. I love my heirlooms!

The main course was Tuscan fiery chili frittata with Tuscan marinara with roasted garlic. This was super easy to make, just add water and olive oil, mix, and pour into a baking dish. Next time I would use a larger baking dish; I spilled the mixture on the VERY hot oven and had to turn everything off for the cleanup as you do need to preheat it to 500.

Once the frittata was cooked and set, I topped it with the marinara and some grated parmesan cheese.

Soft, hot, comforting, and spicy, I loved the frittata. I had never had this before, and it reminded me a little bit of polenta. I loved how savory and satisfying it was. And I can’t wait to have a slice on top of salad for lunch today.

In other news, I bought a juicer over the tax free weekend, and I can’t wait to start drinking fresh juice a few times a week in addition to my veggie smoothies. Last night I made one with carrots, bok choy, apples, and lime. Delicious!

With fall coming, I love that feeling of renewal, and part of that is definitely getting back into a better workout routine and really nourishing myself, all while still savoring summer, of course. Getting ready for fall makes me think all about new beginnings, new clothes, and this year a new class, my wine class at the Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource Center at BU.

It’s also a great time to do some shopping for the home, new kitchen appliances, bedding, and maybe even dining room furniture. To help one of my lucky readers with that, CSN Stores is offering a $50 gift card to one lucky reader. They have SO much great stuff; I would love to win this giveaway!

To enter: Leave a comment responding to the question below. If you have Facebook or Twitter, link back to this post there as well as on your blog if you have one. The giveaway will end on Saturday, August 21. Good luck!

Even if you are, like me, no longer in school, do you still feel that new-ness when fall starts approaching? What do you to to welcome it?

I am hard at work trying to find great prizes from great companies for you all, so make sure to enter! ;)

How was the weekend? Mine was excellent. It started with a half day Friday and a more than annoying train ride to NJ.  The Amtrak conductor on train 137 DEMANDED that I move seats at Providence to accommodate 3 people traveling together. Me, with my laptop and paperwork and books and all out, me working away on the left side of the train so I could see the ocean in Old Saybrook and Mystic, my plan since I bought the tickets. Now, I am a nice person and would have willingly gotten up, had there been no other seats together for these people, but well, there were seats a few rows down, and how rude to just tell me to MOVE like that? Manners, Amtrak employees, manners. On the way back I saw the same conductor yelling at a family for taking too long to get off the train. Cranky pants.

After that snafoo, the weekend got better. I had very limited internet access other than my Blackberry so I went with the flow and enjoyed something that I am never am, UNPLUGGED. My back thanks me for not being hunched over a computer for a few days, my mind thanks me for not obsessing over work and blogging, and my heart thanks me for filling it with the warmth and love that only going home can do.

I got to see my almost 96 year old nana who is mentally sharp as a whip and in pretty excellent physical shape too. I spent lots of time hanging with mom, playing with my niece, and catching up with my sister and brother in law. It was perfectly restful and restorative. I have a CRAZY busy week ahead, with 2 dinners out, a wine tasting Tuesday, and Vino Voyage on Thursday (and possibly Taste of the North End Friday!), not to mention the launch of a bunch of work projects, so it was nice to just be.

There was some great food, including a visit to Vincenzo’s, a homey Italian ristorante with delicious food.

Complimentary bruschetta got us started.

And we shared a Shrimp Milano with shitake mushrooms for the table.

Along with an antipasto, soft mozzarella drizzled with fine olive oil

Cold Antipasto

And a house salad, dressed with olive oil and vinegar

House Salad

My entree was a big splurge, spinach ravioli with creamy spinach sauce. It was rich and buttery with wilted spinach. The sauce tasted like it had a bit of liqueur in it,and it reminded me I need to make one of my favorite dishes that my mom makes, a delicious creamy shrimp dish with Ouzo and dill. Amazingness.

Ravioli with Spinach Cream

After dinner my niece, Isabella, hosted an ice cream party for the family. She is almost 3, so she made her own sundae for the first time. Sprinkles were the main concern, although there were strawberries, bananas, caramel, chocolate, and whipped cream as well.

Sprinkles

Isabella agreed to have a sleepover with my mom and me, so she packed her overnight bag, and we spent the rest of the evening “cooking” with dried beans and pasta, playing veterinarian with band-aids and stuffed animals, and finally reading stories in bed with teeny tiny armed hugs. Is there anything better?

I don’t think so.
